National Park Service Pecos Trading Post

The scope of work included:  Abatement to remove rodent droppings;  Shoring up the building’s foundations systems with concrete piers and grade beams; Stabilization of walls and roofing systems; Restoration of the building’s adobe walls which involved constrained removal of the old plaster stucco system in a checker board manner to maintain wall stability followed by testing and replacement of block;  Restoration of the roofing system which included repairs and replacements of canales, corbels, and vigas. 

 

Interior work included restoration of flooring and ceilings, installation of a new electrical service, new mechanical system, new plumbing and plumbing fixtures, and new fire suppression system.Civil site work included trenching for utility upgrades, a septic tank and disposal field, grading for erosion control, paving for entry road and parking lot, concrete pads for equipment, sidewalks, fencing, landscaping, and restoration of the courtyard area including the adobe wall surrounding the structure.

 

The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and all construction work had to conform to Secretary of the Interior’s ‘Guidelines for Historic Preservation Protocol’.These Guidelines establish standards for historic restoration work and emphasize retention of as much of the original fabric of the structure as possible.The Guidelines require documentation of the all phases of the project in order to confirm and verify the structure’s original “fabric” and the proper execution of preservation/restoration/reconstruction methods.

 

The work involved all major construction disciplines and more, including:  civil, structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, architectural, fire protection, roofing, and insulation, as well as historic preservation specialists, adobe specialists, wood restoration specialists, and plaster specialists.
